Exhibition "Collections of the Rossi’s Library. Illustrated Books of XVI-XIX centuries, from the collection of the Pavlovsk Palace ".The State Museum "Pavlovsk", for the first time in our days, will show to the visitors the rare antique illustrated books from the collections of the Pavlovsky Palace.

The library of the Pavlovsk Palace is a vast collection of rare and antique books, numbering now over 11 thousand copies. Among them are rare medieval manuscripts, first printed Russian and Western books of the XVIII century, decorated with engravings of the great masters, illustrated editions of the XIX century. Part of this unique collection can be seen in the exhibition, launched in the historic Hall of the Library of Rossi.

The Library of the Pavlovsk Palace is one of the largest collections of books in St. Petersburg. It had started from the collection of 33 books - "The Road Library" of Catherine II, which the Empress had presented to her son, the future Emperor Paul I. In subsequent decades, the library was filled up with Paul’s wife, Maria Feodorovna. In 1824, a special room was built for the library by the project of Carlo Rossi, which later had received the name "Library of Rossi". The books were placed in 34 glass cabinets in a systematic manner. In 1828, the collection was close to 21 000 copies and included almost all the knowledge of the XVIII century - the natural and exact sciences, politics, history, arts and crafts, new and ancient literature. After the death of Maria Feodorovna (1828), the library was conserved, and the subsequent owners of the Pavlovsk Palace had kept it as a memorial to her.

This exhibition will be interesting to a wide range of museum visitors: from the professionals - bibliophiles, historians, artists, book illustrators, to those who are just starting to learn the art.
