September 23, 2010: II International Music Festival "Under the sign of eternity"
II Saint-Petersburg International Music Festival 'Under the sign of eternity'

II International Music Festival "Under the sign of eternity" From 21 to 28 September 2010 the State Saint-Petersburg Conservatory will host the II Saint-Petersburg International Music Festival "Under the sign of eternity." The artistic director of the festival is the rector of the Saint-Petersburg Conservatory, the highly renowned artist of Russia - Serguey Stadler. The festival "Under the sign of eternity" is the only one in Saint-Petersburg, and one of the few of the events of an equal scale in Russia, which is organized thematically. Each year the program of the festival is built around a single cross-cultural theme, to which the artists from many different countries have applied for at least two centuries. The Second International Music Festival "Under the sign of eternity" is devoted to the times of Tzaers. The festival is subtitled "The Royal Book" and is devoted to persons of three Russian Tsars - Ivan the Terrible, Boris Godunov, Peter The Great. In Russia, until 1913, there was an order of the Emperor Nicholas I, prohibiting to represent the members of the Romanov's dynasty on stage, and limiting the representation of Rurik's. That is why, there is no single opera in Russia, with the participation of Peter the Great or Catherine the Great. But since the complexity of the history of Russia, largely determined by the vertical, often tragical relations between tzar's and people, the figures of Russian rulers could fail to excite great russian artists. II Saint-Petersburg International Music Festival 'Under the sign of eternity' The festival program is based on the works of great composers, whose works were influenced by the powerful and controversial nature of the Russian rulers: Tchaikovsky - Opera "Oprichnik", Rimsky-Korsakov - the operas "The Maid of Pskov" and "Tsar's Bride", Mussorgsky - "Boris Godunov ", Rubinstein - the opera" Merchant Kalashnikov ", Slonim - "Visions of Ivan the Terrible", Petrov - "Peter I". The undoubtedly great discovery of the festival will become the little-known opera of the great French composer Georges Bizet - "Ivan the Fourth", that will be performed here for the first time in Russia. In the program of the same concert, which is called the "Russian Tzars in the eyes French", will be featured the selected fragments of the opera "Peter I" by the french composer - Andre Gretry. The concert will be held on September 25, and is devoted to the Year of Russia in France.

September 22, 2010: The Meissen Pocelain exhibition in Catherine's Palace in Pushkin
The Meissen Pocelain exhibition in Catherine's Palace in Pushkin
The world-famous Meissen Porcelain Manufactory is the cradle of European porcelain-making, has determined the development of European porcelain and ceramics for many decades. This year 2010 sees a remarkable co-incidence of the 300th anniversaries of Meissen Porcelain in Germany and of Tsarskoye Selo in Russia, which triggered this unique joint exhibition project: three hundred Meissen items from the private collection of Mr. Kurt Krockenberger (Remshalden-Grunbach, Germany) are put on display in the Church Anteroom of the Catherine's Palace. For over two centuries, the high-quality Meissen porcelains graced royal palaces and suburban residences of the St. Petersburg. Meissen vases, formal and everyday tableware, figures and sculpture groups served as interior decorations for the Catherine and Alexander Palaces since the mid-1700s. Unfortunately, much of them were lost during the Second World War, so this is a great chance to admire works of the leading European porcelain maker within these walls again. The exhibition consists of several sections: Oriental and European motifs on 18th-century porcelain, Mid-18th-century porcelain modelling and shaping, Classical porcelain, Second-quarter and late-19th-century porcelain, and Art Nouveau and Art Deco porcelain. The vast and varied collection of Kurt Krockenberger introduces the main trends of the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory during the 18th–20th centuries and provides rich material for the study of the history of this largest European porcelain production center.
  • The exhibition is open till August 30, 2011 in the Church Anteroom (Catherine's Palace), 10.00–17.00 daily except Tuesdays and the last Monday of each month.
September 21, 2010: "The Sails of Hellas. Classical Antiquity Navigation" - New exhibition in Menshikov Palace
The Sails of Hellas. Classical Antiquity Navigation
A new temporal exhibition opens today in the Menshikov Palace. It will last from September 21, 2010 till January 16, 2011. The exhibition traces the development in Classical Antiquity of navigation, fishery and beliefs in sea gods and deities that either patronized or tried to destroy seamen. Both admiration and fear of the sea are manifested in the fine art works and everyday objects that have come down to us from the period. Distinguished among the exhibits featuring the achievements of ancient shipbuilders is a krater decorated with sailing naval ships represented along the rim. A fresco fragment from Nymphaeum shows, next to numerous other graffiti, an entire fleet of trade ships (scratched). A variety of types of ships and boats are to be seen on the intaglios (carved semi-precious stones) and coins. A large section of the exhibition deals with the images of sea deities and mythological monsters which enjoyed a great popularity among contemporary artists. Marble sculptures, elegant painted vessels, terracotta and bronze statuettes, pieces of jewellery illustrate myths and legends of Poseidon (Neptune), Nereids, nymphs, hippocampi and tritons. A special attention is paid to the fishery of Antiquity and sea products eaten by ancient Greeks and Romans. On view are nets and other devices for catching fish, as well as instruments with which they were made and repaired. The works of art on display depict numerous sea creatures, fishes and mollusks, which were sold on ancient markets. The exhibition contains plates and dishes used for serving fish which would form the most part of food allowances. A motif of sea shell was very fashionable. It was employed by sculptors, jewellers and those craftsmen who made clay, glass and stone vessels. The section dedicated to sea trade displays an inscription of the ship-owners union, coins from many ancient cities and, of course, the famous amphorae used as transport vessels. Navigation in Antiquity evolved over the course of many centuries and had a great impact on the further development of the skill. © State Hermitage Museum

  • September 04, 2010: The Branch of State Hermitage Museum in the General Staff Building is nearly ready to open for public.
Recently, the Hermitage had organized a specialized visit for the journalists and the elite of the global museum community into the "inner sanctum" - the reconstructed rooms of the building of the General Staff. In the part of the building that is adjacent to the Arch of the General Staff, the repairs are nearly complete. Together with journalists, the renovation works were visited by the Director of the British Museum - Neil MacGregor, the President-Director of the Louvre - Henri Loyrette, the Director of the Paris Centre Pompidou - Alfred Packman and, of course, the Director of the Hermitage - Mikhail Piotrovsky. All of them are an advisory board of the Hermitage - a collegiate body, in discussing the strategy of the museum. The eastern wing of the General Staff Building on Palace Square was allocated to the Hermitage in 1993. In 2008, there was officially presented the project of reconstruction of the building, designed by St. Petersburg's architectural studio "Studio 44", and the zero cycle of works had started. The project is expected to clear five courtyards of the building, cover them with glass domes and transform into indoor atriums. The buildings between the courtyards will turn into a single suite of exhibition halls. The viewer will be able to go through this suite, enjoying art in the halls and gardens in the glass-covered yards. The building will remain exactly the same from outside. The interior works in the exhibition rooms with a total area of about 600 square meters are finishing now. The movement of Hermitage collections into the General Staff building will begin in September 2010, and the new halls will open for the public in December 2010. The first to be opened, will be the halls of contemporary art, the student club and part of the gallery of Shchukin and Morozov, which will be located in the courtyards area.

September 2, 2010: The documentary film "Oceans" will be presented in St. Petersburg.
"Oceans" is a new documentary movie from the creator of "The Birds" and "Microcosmos" - Jacques Perrin. The premiere will take place in the cinema "Neva". The movie will be released to open public on September 9. The "Oceans" movie reveals a hidden life of the inhabitants of the ocean bottoms and coasts, but the picture looks simply fantastic. For instance, some examples of the underwater fauna, shown in the movie, were never seen before, and some - never seen so close, as the authors of "Ocean." The French documentalists are following the rule of "entertaining and enlightening". They had created an incredibly colorful epic canvas of the life of the ocean and it's inhabitants, using a very sophisticated technology, but at the same time, the accessible language tells us about such important things as the relationship between man and nature, the interaction between the sea creatures, the history of life on our planet. Besides, "Oceans" get an incredible dignity by it's music. A prominent composer Bruno Coulais, who wrote the music for all the previous films of Jacques Perrin, has created a real ocean symphony, perfectly transmitting and atmosphere of the film, and the mood of its main characters for this movie.
September 01, 2010: A new temporary exhibition has opened today in the Marble Palace.
The personal exhibition of the South Korea's contemporary artist Lee Kwang-Ha represents about 60 paintings and drawings, made since the late 1970's by nowadays. Lee Kwang-Ha is the laureate of many art competitions, as well as honorary artist of the National Society of Fine Arts in Paris. His solo exhibitions were held in Korea, Japan, China, France, USA and other countries. The creativity of the artist is based on the harmonious interaction of Western and Eastern artistic traditions, the combination of abstract and figurative visual motifs. His formation as a master has coincided with the approval of abstraction, as the main trend of contemporary art in South Korea. However, in the paintings of Lee Kwang-Ha, the abstraction is perceived primarily a rugged construction, which includes elements of classical Korean art - the easy recognizable symbols: crane, lotus, bamboo, mountain, as well as domestic ornaments and hieroglyphs. The combination of these images creates a beautiful decorative ensemble, reminiscent of oriental rug or a precious jewel. Each of his works, the author regards as a kind of narrative about the history of love. No wonder that such a name - «Love Story» - have all the works presented at the exhibition.
